Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi Urges Consumers to Save a Life – Adopt a Dog

Hayward, California (EastBayDaily) — In recognition of October as National Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month, Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi (D-Hayward) is encouraging consumers to consider adopting a dog and supporting local shelters and rescue groups.

“There are many wonderful dogs in shelters in the Bay Area and across the state in need of a good home,” stated Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi. “Dogs bring so much joy to our lives, and you can make a world of difference by choosing to adopt. If you can’t adopt at this time, please consider spreading the word about these animals in need, or volunteering with your local shelter or a rescue group.”

The Humane Society reports that six to eight million cats and dogs enter shelters each year. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states that only 20 to 30 percent of cats and dogs will be adopted from shelters and rescue groups. Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month serves to raise awareness about the plight of these animals, and to encourage the public to adopt rather than buy dogs that may come from the inhumane puppy mill industry.

On July 14, 2012, Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi hosted a Pet Health and Safety Fair, where the public was invited to bring their pets for free health screenings and to hear important health and safety tips from animal experts. Pet owners brought over 400 animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, and two tiny turtles to the Hayward City Hall grounds.

The event served to raise awareness about the importance of pet adoptions and spaying and neutering pets, and featured the Alameda County Veterinary Medical Association, the Hayward Fire Department, the Hayward Animal Shelter and the East Bay SPCA.

For more information about dog adoptions, please call the Hayward Animal Shelter at (510) 293-7200 or the East Bay SPCA at (510) 639-7387.

Assemblywoman Mary Hayashi serves the 18th Assembly District, which includes San Leandro, Hayward, Dublin, most of Castro Valley and Pleasanton, and a portion of Oakland, as well as the unincorporated areas of Ashland, Cherryland, San Lorenzo and Sunol.
