Bay Area Auction House Michaan’s Auctions Introduces Director of Fine Arts, Offers Advice on the Fine Art Market

Alameda, California (EastBayDaily) — Thomas De Doncker, director of fine arts at Michaan’s Auctions, is graciously sharing his insights and advice regarding the fine art market. With more than 20 years of experience in the field and an impeccable list of credentials and achievements, De Doncker's expertise helps clients determine the true value of works of fine art. His positions include service as a director of fine arts, American and California paintings specialist, director of American paintings and fine arts conservator. De Doncker was also designated founder and president of the Chicago Art Auction, as well as founding the Chicago-based Thomas De Doncker Fine Arts Gallery. His accreditations include a certificate in appraisal studies from New York University, a Master of Arts from the University of Kansas and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wisconsin. De Doncker was also awarded a doctoral fellowship from the City University of New York Graduate Center, was a selected participant in the Sotheby’s works of art program and was a Murphy recipient at the University of Kansas.

“Investing in fine art is a long tested, tried and true method for preserving one’s wealth,” De Doncker said. “It is undoubtedly an effective means to maintain principal while enjoying appreciation in value over time.”

However, De Doncker noted that there are many outside factors that affect the market flow of fine arts. In his opinion, one of the most major factors is the rise in the popularity of the field. De Doncker believes that the ever-increasing amount of individuals who pursue training and education in fine arts results in the overwhelming production of art pieces being sold in the modern-day market.

“For 99.5 percent of all art objects created in modern times, the highest value pieces will ever achieve is in the initial purchase,” De Doncker said.

De Doncker has also taken notice of the growing popularity of television programs that feature art, which at times, can mislead viewers.

“Exposure to these programs has unfortunately led many to believe that every trinket, glass giraffe, collector plate or porcelain figure is a priceless treasure,” De Doncker said. “It is the seasoned, well-studied collector that avoids these pitfalls in judgement. A knowledgeable collector knows to gravitate toward the special, rare and unique.”

Thomas De Doncker's knowledge and experience provides clients with up-to-the-minute, market accurate appraisals.
