Berkeley, California (EastBayDaily) — The Acupressure Institute, a Bay Area massage therapy school that provides Acupressure training, is proud to announce that one of its instructors, Tom Sherman, will participate in the AIDS/Lifecycle Ride to End AIDS. From June 3 to June 9, Sherman will ride a bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The cause is close to the heart for both the Acupressure Institute and instructor Sherman, who is HIV-positive. Sherman teaches Skin Brushing, Chakra Applications and his signature class – Acupressure for HIV/AIDs. The Acupressure Institute has donated $50 in support of Sherman’s ride, and will donate an additional dollar for every new student who joins a class this month.
“With your help, I'll be putting money into two major California HIV/AIDS organizations to help continue their important work,” Sherman wrote in an open letter. “With funding for all safety net programs, including HIV/AIDS, in constant jeopardy, raising private funding is more important than ever. With 21 percent of the estimated 1.1 million Americans currently living with HIV undiagnosed, the future needs of this population group will be great. The AIDS crisis is far from over.
“The ride also expresses my gratitude for the health and vitality that allows me to take on this endurance athletic event at age 62. Hopefully my participation serves as a role model to those living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic, life-threatening illnesses. They, too, can manage their conditions and live in a high state of wellness. I hope my effort also inspires and motivates other elders to start, maintain or increase their exercise programs and be increasingly mindful of healthy nutrition and daily self-care.”
