Berkeley, California (EastBayDaily) — The LightRoom, offering fine art printing, photography services and inkjet printing in Berkeley and the Bay Area, is announcing its newest exhibit that features local photographer Steve Bollman’s black and white photography of Cuba. InFidelidad provides a look at life on the island in the waning days of the Castro era in 2003 and will be open to the public from April 30 until May 25. An opening reception will be held on May 5 from 2 p.m. through 5 p.m.
“Although Cuba's infrastructure has been on the decline for many years, her people have found innumerable ways to cope. Cubans are masterful improvisers, in life and in music. It's easy to imagine, as Cuba's communism gives way to capitalism, that it will be a very different place in the not so distant future, once the hotel chains move in and Havana is awash in a new coat of paint that glosses over all the years of suffering,” Steve Bollman explained. “These images were made in 2003 during a visit with my old friend Ernesto Bazan.”
InFidelidad documents a variety of daily activities in Cuba when Bollman visited the country. Through his photography, he hoped to feature the heart and soul of a Cuba that symbolizes the country’s unique style in music, art and culture.
Steven Bollman was born in New York City and graduated from School of Visual Arts (NYC) with a BFA in Photography in 1983. After graduating, he began his career as a freelance photographer working on editorial and commercial assignments.
His work has been published in Aperture, U.S. News and World Report, Vanity Fair and Newsday, among other publications. In 1987 he joined the photo agency Matrix to cover Haiti's Democratic elections. He has worked on photographic essays in Cuba, Haiti, Sicily, Spain, France and New York. Currently, he is shooting food with a camera.
