Brundo Offers Weekly Cooking Classes in Oakland

Oakland, California (EastBayDaily) — Brundo, providing authentic Ethiopian herbs, spices, legumes and exotic blends for North Oakland’s Café Colucci, offers cooking classes twice per week.

The classes, offered out of Brundo for over three years, contain both vegan and traditional options, and are followed by a sit-down meal. The next traditional class will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, and the next vegan class at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12. They offer many aspects of Ethiopian cuisine, including an introduction to spice blending, butter clarifying and seasoning, fermenting batter and baking with teff, coffee roasting and brewing, cooking with seeds and blending drinks, sacred herbs and healing spices, and brewing wine with gesho or aroma hops. Participants will learn how to prepare Ethiopian creations such as begue wot, doro alicha, doro wot, collard greens, kik alicha, messer wot and sega alicha.

Classes require an $85 registration fee, and are located at Brundo, 1960 Mandela Parkway. Though they are held in a three-hour time block, it is recommended that participants give themselves extra time before class to find the entrance to Brundo, which is on 18th Street. Even more time may be necessary to find parking. Also, it is not recommended to make plans right after class either, as some may end an hour after the schedule time.
