Educate Our State Gathers Signatures for Important Initiative

Oakland, California (EastBayDaily) — Educate Our State announced that it is collecting signatures for the “Protection of Local School Revenues Act of 2014” to qualify for the November ballot. This initiative will return $7 billion in local property taxes allocated to schools [¼ of the total] back to schools.

“This initiative will ensure that the taxes that communities pay to support local schools and students are in fact used for this purpose, further strengthening fairness and transparency in the way that California funds its education system,” stated David N. Plank, Professor (Research), Graduate School of Education, Stanford University.

The signature drive began on February 6, 2014 at farmers’ markets, transit stations, school sidewalks, local house parties and other venues across the state. “Look for volunteers wearing orange-and-white-striped stovepipe hats,” stated Katherine Welch, Educate Our State board member and ballot-measure proponent. “We have outfitted Californians in these distinctive hats to gather signatures for this initiative.”

The group needs to collect 1.3 million signatures by April 15, 2014, in order to qualify for the November ballot. “This is a lofty goal for volunteers without outside funding, but we are committed to trying to reach every citizen of this state who cares about education to help us reach that goal,” said Welch.
