Three cheers for Sweet Red, the latest offering from FishEye Winery, which is being released in May in the U.S. Sourced and produced in South Eastern Australia,FishEye Sweet Red is an authentically Australian chillable red wine that is a vibrant example of the masterful blends that Aussie winemakers are known for.
“Sweet red blends are all the rage right now in the States, but in Australia, we’ve been crafting varietal blends from the get go. We know what works and what doesn’t. I wanted to make an approachable, food friendly wine that appeals to new and experienced wine drinkers alike,” commented FishEye winemaker Steve Roden. “Our Sweet Red is a real beaut’ with unique floral characters, a soft and generous palate, and a long finish that truly sets it apart from other wines in the category.”
Beginning in May, the wine is available nationally in three sizes: 750 mL (SRP $7), 1.5L (SRP $12), and 3L (SRP $18). Starting with a Shiraz base, the wine is sweetened with Moscato and other varieties. The resulting blend has great flavor and textural complexity: juicy flavors of blackberries and strawberry jam jump out of the glass and are complemented by a floral nose and smooth, lush finish. Well integrated hints of oak add to the dimensionality of the wine as well. Since the wine is so robust and rich, it pairs well with similarly robust flavors such as lamb gyros or spicy tom yum soup. It’s a big wine for an adventurous eater but also an excellent choice for a refreshing sip on its own.
