Livermore Community Blood Drive Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary

Livermore, California (EastBayDaily) — On December 14, the Livermore Community Blood Drive will mark its 10-year anniversary. The American Red Cross will observe the milestone with a special ceremony celebrating the blood drive.

Every other month for the past decade, the Livermore Community Blood Drive has worked to help provide blood for local patients in need. To date, 3,082 pints of blood have been collected over the course of 60 individual drives.

“Our appreciation goes out to the people of Livermore,” Northern California Blood Services Region CEO Jeff Meyer said. “Their generosity and dedication has had a positive impact on the lives of literally thousands of hospital patients. The community should be proud of what it has been able to accomplish.”

One Livermore resident in particular has played an integral role in the success of the Livermore Community Blood Drive. Thomas Petty, of WSI Smart Solutions, has sponsored the blood drive since Day One.

“As long-time donors, my wife, Joanne, and I decided to start a local drive for our community, and it has just grown from there,” Petty said. “We’ve met lots of interesting people, and are so grateful for all the people who come out to help others by giving blood. It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years, and we’ve collected nearly 3100 units in that time.”

Petty’s passion for working with the Red Cross has led him to join the Board of Directors for the Northern California Blood Services Region. He currently serves as chairman of the board.

The 10-year anniversary blood drive will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church (4743 East Avenue) from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. The celebration starts at 3 p.m. and Melo’s Pizza in Livermore is donating pizza for blood donors and staff.

Petty added, “We hope the entire community will come together during this season of giving, enjoy some pizza, and of course, donate a pint of blood. Donors literally affect the lives of others with this gift.”

Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental permission), meet height and weight requirements (at least 110 pounds based on height) and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.
