Walnut Creek, California (EastBayDaily) — Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services of Contra Costa County has been hit hard by sequestration and the economy. The only county-wide organization helping seniors with seven programs has hired a Director of Development. Cheryl Nickerson, the new Director of Development, will lead the organization's strategic fundraising efforts.
The organization needs to raise individual donations and foundation giving in order to continue to support the growing senior population. Contra Costa has an estimated 140,300 seniors age 65 or older, representing 13% of the total population. Senior are the fastest growing segment of the population.
Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services, through one or more of their seven programs, helped over 5,000 seniors last year and assisted over 9,900 seniors over the phone. This was an increase over the previous year. 2013 figures show an additional increase in service requests.
Meals on Wheels and Senior Outreach Services recently completed a new strategic plan which focuses on diversifying funding in order to meet the growing need for services. The addition of Cheryl Nickerson as the Director of Development is in line with the strategic plan.
