Pleasanton, California (EastBayDaily) — With the “Milk Cliff” precipice safely in the rear view mirror, dairy farmers nationwide are now turning their attention back to an increasingly deep pool of regulations governing the management of animal waste. Agriculture is cited as a major contributor of nutrient load in water bodies throughout the country and this is drawing increased scrutiny from state and non governmental organizations.
At the recent California Alfalfa and Grains Symposium farm tour, held on December 10th, Jack Hamm of Lima Ranch in Lodi, held up a packed binder for attendees to see. “It costs about $5000 a week to keep up with regulatory compliance” Hamm says.
iCropTrak is now available for iPhone devices making it even easier for equipment operators and farm managers to gather data in a structured manner, store it in a central location and share it with others. “Manure management plans can now be administered using iCropTrak software on an iPhone or iPad instead of using a paper notebook” announced Rob Wood, iCropTrak VP of Sales and Marketing. “Dairy farmers can use the map driven interface to track soil test information, establish nutrient disposal budgets for each acre, assess setback requirements, determine optimal manure application rates on their fields and keep track of each manure truckload that is spread,” Rob explained.
Manure management plan data collection requirements were setup using the iCropTrak form builder tool in a matter of hours as part of a collaboration project with Daniel Ochs, a New York State dairy industry consultant. The data collection template, that is now in a field trial program, will help farmers optimize the nutrient re-use of manure and avoid potential environmental contamination. “This is an administrative, environmental and regulatory reporting pain reliever” Dan mentioned. “The technology is easy to use and can be easily updated if regulations change”, he added.
