Misinformation about Sunscreen and Safe Sun Protection Still Confusing Consumers

Berkeley, California (EastBayDaily) — Natural skin care company Marie Veronique Organics’ line of EWG top rated sunscreens is based on the philosophy that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. “This philosophy could not be more true when it comes to your skin and the sun. The problem is that there is still widespread misinformation about sunscreen and safe sun protection that is causing consumer confusion” says founder, Marie Veronique Nadeau.

According to Marie and CEO Hillary Peterson, the earlier you start protecting your skin from sun damage, the better. Using a minimum of SPF 15 during the first 18 years of your life, could lower skin cancer odds by as much as 80%. “Even though, like me, most are probably well past 18, sun protection is still essential every day, winter or summer, rain or shine.” Peterson continues, “And while most people recognize the importance of wearing sunscreen, there is still too much misinformation about safe sun protection. This is one of the main reasons we created a simple guide to help expose the biggest myths related to safe, natural sunscreen.”

Marie Veronique Organics’ latest educational resource, “6 Natural Sunscreen Myths Exposed” sheds light on the six, most prevalent sunscreen myths while providing accurate information to help consumers understand the safest, most effective sunscreen options available on the market today. Myths exposed include:

"Natural sunscreen is not as effective as conventional, chemical sunscreen." While sunscreens containing chemicals often offer high SPF ratings, their lack of stability can ultimately create as much damage as the sun itself. Natural sunscreens containing non-nano zinc oxide are much more effective over the long run because they are much more stable.

"All natural sunscreens that claim to be safe are safe." When shopping for a mineral sunscreen, your best bet to assure safety is to avoid titanium dioxide and opt for sunscreens made with zinc oxide only.

"Natural sunscreens do not effectively provide UVA protection." The best protection against UVA rays is zinc oxide found in natural sunscreens.

"Higher SPF from chemical sunscreens means better protection." Mineral sunscreens with broad spectrum protection AND an SPF of 20- 30 protect better against photodamage and serious skin cancer than products with higher SPF ratings. An additional advantage of lower SPF sunscreens is that you are more likely to remember to apply sunscreen more frequently—this is not a drawback!

"I only need to wear sunscreen during the summer months, natural or not." For those serious about photoaging and skin cancer prevention protecting from UVA damage is a daily, all-season affair. Skin safety is not just about preventing sunburn!

"Getting a “base tan” will help prevent further sun burn or damage." There is no such thing as a “healthy tan.” Any sign of change in skin color is a sign of damage from UV radiation.

The new guide addresses each myth and provides an easy-to-follow rule of thumb. “As we roll into the later summer months, a time when most families go on vacation and receive the most sun exposure they will likely receive all year, we wanted to provide a simple guide to safer, natural sunscreen.” says Peterson. “We’ve created our latest, exclusive offer with this in mind. For a limited time customers can receive a full size After Sun Mist (with our favorite reparative ingredients) with the purchase of our best-selling Sun Protection Duet (the perfect combination of natural sunscreen and sun protective oils).
