San Leandro, California (EastBayDaily) — If you aren't familiar with the term "Zero Net Energy” or what it's all about, you'll definitely want to catch the latest documentary from Electric TV. Featured this week is a unique San Francisco Bay Area building that is serving as a model for business and institutional structures across the nation. It was constructed by members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) – two labor organizations that have been at the forefront of setting professional standards for the industry.
The building is known (appropriately enough) as the NECA – IBEW Zero Net Energy Center. Located in San Leandro, California, this building incorporates cutting-edge green energy technology while showcasing the commitment of NECA and IBEW to providing the best training and education for today's electrical workers.
The ZNE Center is a technological wonder that uses only a quarter of the energy consumed by comparable structures. Employing a wide variety of green energy-generating equipment and architectural design like solar panels, wind turbines, lighting controls, passive heating and ventilation systems as well as strategic window placement, the building has earned LEED Silver designation from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Also highlighted in the short documentary is the fact that this green building represents the result of cooperation between labor, business and government. San Leandro Mayor Stephen Cassidy says, “Government can't do it alone; we need to work in partnership business and with labor, and this [the ZNE building] is a perfect example of how the three groups can come together and create a model for other(s).”
Of course, a large part of the equation is the sizable investment on the part of NECA and IBEW to the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (NJATC), which insures that the new generation of electrical workers has the skills, tools and knowledge to carry out these projects to the highest standards.
