New Book Promotes Self Awareness in Life and in Love

Oakland, California (EastBayDaily) — Finding love in this world isn’t easy, especially when everyone seems to have an opinion about it.

For writer Chris Delyani, who married his partner in 2008 before California passed Proposition 8 banning gay marriage, it has always been his prerogative to be true to himself stand up for what he believes in.

Inspired by the Jane Austen novel, Mansfield Park, a book he read when he was first telling people he was gay, Delyani pens his new fiction, "You Are Here," which explores lessons in relationships, society and life.

“I have always been drawn by that tension between Henry Crawford and Fanny Price in Mansfield Park, and I suppose that’s the tension I wanted to re-create in my novel,” Delyani says. “But that was the first kernel of the story, in the years since I’ve added many other layers to the book.”

As the three main characters fall into a love triangle, important life lesson are divulged: love takes hard work, looks aren’t everything, it is easier to blame than to forgive, and isolating yourself isn’t the answer to your problems, no matter what they may be.

Delyani has one ultimate goal through his book: to remind readers that finding true love is possible, but it takes hard work, self-awareness and courage. He draws on the sights and sounds of San Francisco, a place of great self-discovery for Delyani, to create the background scenery in his new fiction.

“I wrote this novel sort of as a thank you to the city of San Francisco,” Delyani says. “As much as I loved growing up in Boston, I felt like my life didn’t really begin until I moved out here, and I think my book shows how much I honor that.”
