NextWindow Announces Five-Touch Optical Desktop Touch Screen

Pleasanton, California (EastBayDaily) — NextWindow, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SMART Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ: SMT) (TSX: SMA), announces the NextWindow DesktopTouch 6S, the company’s first six-camera, five-touch screen technology for PCs. The DesktopTouch 6S is groundbreaking new technology that meets the requirements for supporting the Microsoft® Windows® 8 operating system. Windows 8 is designed to provide an enriched experience for users of tablets, laptops and desktop PCs, and features a new Metro-style interface designed for optimal touch-screen input. NextWindow's latest touch-screen technology for PCs will deliver new opportunities for interactive developers worldwide.

With its multitouch capabilities and enhanced performance, the NextWindow DesktopTouch 6S is an advanced collaborative solution for consumer, business and education customers. NextWindow develops some of the most user-friendly touch screens available today with its optical touch technology that delivers zero-pressure touch, for faster response and reduced wear and tear on the screen. Users can activate the screen with any object, including a finger, pen, brush or stylus. The DesktopTouch 6S is available in screen sizes ranging from 15" to 30" (38to 76 cm), and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can choose to supply their own glass or purchase complete touch-screen solutions. The six cameras are embedded around the screen to deliver consistent touch response across the entire display, enabling multiple users to simultaneously view content and perform tasks with extreme accuracy. With five touch points, the display makes it easier for users to interact with on-screen objects, use drawing tools, navigate throughout the operating system and play games. NextWindow’s screens are integrated with PCs and monitors produced by leading OEMs including HP, Dell, Sony, Toshiba, Samsung and NEC.

“Today, optical touch represents a leading technology for consumer touch displays from 15" to 30" (38 to 76 cm),” says Geoff Walker, Principal Analyst, Touch Research with IMS Research. “The NextWindow DesktopTouch 6S is one of the few desktop touch technologies that will meet Windows 8’s touch requirements for a minimum of five simultaneous touch points and represents cost savings of up to 40 percent compared with competing desktop touch technologies.”

“Touch capabilities on desktops and monitors are becoming increasingly important and optical technology is at the forefront for these touch displays,” says Rusty Stapp, Director of Major Accounts, NextWindow. “The DesktopTouch 6S addresses these needs by fully supporting Microsoft Windows 8 touch requirements while providing an enriched user experience.”
