Oakland, California (EastBayDaily) — Woodminster Summer Musicals, located in Oakland, held the first Jim Schlader Musical Theater Awards earlier this month. The award is presented in memory of Jim Schlader, founder and producer of the Woodminster Summer Musicals. It is granted to members of Woodminster Summer Musicals who are talented musical theater performers and who have made outstanding contributions to the organization.
“Starting in 2011, the Jim Schlader Musical Theater Education Award will be granted each season to a member of the company of Producers Associates’ Woodminster Summer Musicals in recognition of talent in musical theatre performance and production, consistent contributions to the organization, positive attitude, and accomplishments as a team player,” said Kathy Kahn of Woodminster Summer Musicals.
Andrew Moorhead, a recent graduate of Piedmont High School who is now attending Chapman University, received the Jim Schlader Musical Theater Education Award. He is an active member of Woodminster and has participated in nine different Woodminster productions. Moorhead debuted as a Snow Child in Carousel in 2001, and he also performed in the ensemble of My Fair Lady and as the despicable Noah Claypole in Oliver. He has been active in the local community theaters and in Piedmont High School.
Through this annual award, Woodminster Summer Musicals does not only cultivate the talents of its members, but it also offers concrete encouragement to its young members who are pursuing higher education.
