Berkeley, California (EastBayDaily) — This coming weekend in Australia, the University of California Berkeley’s Solar Vehicle Team, CalSol, is preparing for a cross-continent trip across the Outback. CalSol will be racing Impulse, a solar-powered vehicle they constructed by hand. Clad in solar panels and car decals from Signazon.com listing the team’s sponsors, Impulse is ready for the international spotlight and the challenge Down Under.
Dubbed “an adventure of epic proportions,” the 2011 Veolia World Solar Challenge tasks universities around the world to develop a car that runs entirely on solar power and drive it 1800 miles across Australia. 38 teams from 21 countries have entered the race. For the first time, UC Berkeley’s CalSol has answered the call. Their $150,000, street-legal vehicle is the result of 2 years of hard work and dedication by an academically-diverse group of 75 students. Capable of racing at highway speeds, Impulse is CalSol’s seventh solar vehicle since the team’s foundation in 1990.
During the design and build phase of Impulse, CalSol Motor Team Lead and Campus Relations Officer, Isaac Spiegel, reached out to Signazon.com, a nationwide e-commerce company specializing in university signs, to print car decals that feature CalSol’s sponsors, which range from Volkswagen to Panasonic, during the race. “Signazon’s customer service was second to none,” says Spiegel, a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering, “It was great to talk to a person about our project. We had a very custom, complicated project and Signazon made it easy. All of the decals turned out beautifully.”
The sponsor decals are crucial for the success of Impulse in the 2011 Veolia World Solar Challenge. “Without monetary and material sponsorship, CalSol cannot exist,” says Katherine Liu, CalSol’s Business Director, who is a sophomore Economics and Statistics major at UC Berkeley, “We rely on the help and support of our sponsors. Signazon’s decals allow us to show our thanks to our sponsors, as we are able to display the logos of the companies that have extended help to us.”
Signazon.com is proud to be a part of such a ground-breaking event featuring cutting-edge technology. As a firm supporter of higher education, Signazon.com wishes the best of luck to CalSol in the 2011 Veolia World Solar Challenge. To track CalSol’s progress, go to http://www.worldsolarchallenge.org.
