Releases August 2011 U.S. Employment Outlook

Mountain View, California (EastBayDaily) —®, the world’s largest job search engine, today released its August Employment Outlook highlighting national and local market forecasts and job trends.

Nationwide hiring resumes slowly. Nationwide job openings increased for the first time since April, up 6.5 percent month-over-month and 17 percent year-over-year. Openings were previously down -3.8 percent in June and -2.6 percent in May.

“As predicted, job openings are up again as we approach the end of summer,” said Gautam Godhwani, CEO of “Although a 6.5 percent increase is fairly small, we expect to see continued modest growth over the course of the fall season.”

Job openings increase in all major metro areas. In line with the nationwide boost in openings, all 50 major metro areas experienced job growth this month. Thirty-nine metro areas posted growth of more than five percent, with the most substantial increases in Oklahoma City (12.3 percent), Pittsburgh (11.8 percent) and Grand Rapids (11.2 percent).

Hiring resumes in most industries. Fifteen of 18 industries experienced increases in job openings in July, compared to only two out of 18 in June. The greatest growth was in retail (41.1 percent), military (22 percent) and, notably, nonprofit (18.2 percent). Job openings declined in agriculture (-6.1 percent), automotive (-3.1 percent) and manufacturing (-0.3 percent).

More jobs emerge in the healthcare industry. Healthcare companies continued to lead in hiring this month, making up nearly half the list of hiring companies with 42 of 90 unique employers. The next most-represented sectors on the Top Hiring Companies list were education, with nine companies, and financial services, with eight companies.
