Berkeley, California (EastBayDaily) — Trubies rejoice: the next book in the Southern Vampire Mysteries series (aka the Sookie Stackhouse series) is almost here. The audiobook of Deadlocked, the 12th novel in the bestselling series by Charlaine Harris, was recently recorded at Live Oak Studio in Berkeley, California. The book was narrated by actress Johanna Parker, who has also been the voice of all 11 previous Sookie Stackhouse audiobooks.
“It was such a thrill to hear Johanna narrate the new book,” says Priscilla Rice, owner of the suburban San Francisco recording studio. “I don’t want to give anything away, but this book is packed with the action and romance Charlaine Harris writes so well.”
This is the first of the Southern Vampire Mysteries to be recorded at Live Oak Studio. Parker was introduced to the San Francisco area recording studio when she directed Alice Walker reading the Color Purple there in 2009. She was impressed with the sound quality of the studio and the expertise of the staff, so she and her publisher, Recorded Books, chose Live Oak Studio to record Deadlocked.
“I love working at Live Oak. For audiobooks, unlike music, you want the sound to have a really ‘dead’ quality, so there’s no reverb or echo—just the human voice,” says Parker. “The engineer, James Ward, has a great ear, and he makes sure the sound is just right.”
The book was recorded over the course of a week, in six 4-hour sessions. The 20 or so hours of recording will be edited down to around 10 hours. The audiobook will be released on May 1, and will be available on Audible.com, iTunes, Amazon, compact disc, and through libraries.
Parker started recording the Sookie Stackhouse books with book 5, Dead as a Doornail, in 2005. When True Blood premiered on HBO in 2008, the popularity of the audiobooks soared. Parker went back and recorded all of the previous books in the series, as well as each new book, which Harris releases annually. Parker will continue to be the voice of Sookie Stackhouse through book 13, which Harris has said will be the end of the series.
The paper and audio formats of the Southern Vampire Mysteries have both been runaway bestsellers. Harris and Parker have even toured together, with Parker reading excerpts and Harris discussing her writing process.
“I never in a million years dreamed these books would be so huge,” says Parker. “I just loved the voice of Sookie, how she’s so strong but also guarded. But I had no idea the character would connect so deeply with so many people.”
Over the course of the series, Johanna Parker has gained many fans. One iTunes reviewer said, “Johanna Parker breathes life into whatever she narrates.” “What keeps me coming back for more is the narrator, Johanna Parker! The inflection in her voice and her subtle use of accents is perfect for this storyline and I wouldn’t have become a Sookie Stackhouse fan (heck, an audiobook fan) if I hadn’t started listening with the Best of the Best first!” raved another.
