Winners Announced for the 2011 OpenCourseWare People’s Choice Awards

Mountain View, California (EastBayDaily) — From interactive natural history to free textbooks and online DNA,’s 2011 First Annual OpenCourseWare People’s Choice Awards honored the best OpenCourseWare initiatives. is excited to profile the winners and finalists that collectively garnered over 16,000 votes from our readers and OCW enthusiasts around the world.

Voters from the U.S., Brazil, Turkey, The Netherlands and other countries visited and selected a winner in each category: Most Accessible – Open Course Library Best Video Lectures – Middle Eastern Technical University – General Chemistry Lab Best Emerging Initiative – African Virtual University OER Best User Experience – Science to Superheroes to Global Warming, UC Irvine Most Open – College Open Textbooks Best Instructional Supplement – DNA from the Beginning Best Student Participation – Open Study Best OER (non-video) – MIT Physics Department Most Interactive – American Museum of Natural History Most Innovative and Avant-Garde – FGV Online

Over the past week, we awarded and profiled each winner and the finalists on the’s Education Insider. The OCW People’s Choice Awards was a fantastic way to spread the word about the free online courseware from top universities that’s available to all students. believes that OCW and the Open Education Movement is the future of higher learning and the key to making education accessible.
