Walnut Creek, California (EastBayDaily) — YLiving and Rapson Inc. have teamed up to put a new finish on a mid-century modern classic. The 1940s design of the Rapid Rocker by Ralph Rapson was recently resurrected and put back into production after being unavailable for almost 60 years. Not only has the chair been revived in its classic configuration, it is also available in a limited edition Verner Panton fabric, exclusively at YLiving.com.
Although best known as an architect, designing the Guthrie Theatre and the numerous U.S. Embassies, Ralph Rapson was also an accomplished furniture designer. After befriending Florence Schust (Knoll) while studying at the Cranbrook Academy, Ralph Rapson produced a line of rockers for Knoll in the 1940s as part of Hans Knoll’s campaign to bring the modern aesthetic to the American mainstream in the postwar years. Rapson’s rockers debuted in Bloomingdales in 1945.
Rapson’s furniture designs embodied his conviction that design must reflect the constant physical needs to support the user. The cantilevered arms of his two most notable designs, the Rapid Rocker and Greenbelt Rocker, were unprecedented at the time and reflect that mantra. Rapson’s commitment to the human form is also evident in his myriad of sketches which showed realistic human forms with lively personalities that have become trademark Rapson.
After his retirement and subsequent passing, Ralph’s son decided to resurrect Rapson’s mid-century rocker designs. Ralph also left behind a trove of furniture sketches which, although never produced, illustrate his underlying passion for furniture design throughout his career.
As part of the Rapson revival, Rapson Inc. has teamed up with YLiving.com to be the exclusive online dealer of the Rapson Rocker and Greenbelt Rocker. In conjunction, the two have also produced a version of the Rapid Rocker in a Verner Panton textile that will be available for sale for a limited time.
