Hayward, California (EastBayDaily) — Hayward sewer repair contractor Gary Dimodana, owner of Evenflow Plumbing in Hayward says he is just Joe Plumber trying to do his job repairing and replacing sewer pipes, but it is easy to tell he is still emotional about the terrorist attacks that happened on 09/11/2001. On Friday, 09/09/2011, just a couple of days before the 10th anniversary of the 09/11 attacks, Gary worries about new terror threats surfacing in the news. He also reflects on his feelings immediately after the terror attacks and the way the world has changed over the last 10 years.

“When I woke up on September 11th and turned on the TV, I thought I was watching news footage from a movie. When I realized what was happening, the first thing I felt was the tremendous loss of life and the real gravity of what was going on,” says Dimodana. Gary, like most Americans felt a strong feeling of unity and togetherness with other U.S. citizens after the attacks. He was disheartened to see American Muslims being singled out and suffering various hate crimes after the attacks. During his years in the Navy Gary defended the United States and cares for and respects the freedoms we enjoy in The U.S.

After 09/11 Gary started to notice changes. Changes that affect the very freedoms Gary fought to defend. “With the Patriot Acts and the introduction of The Department of Homeland Security a lot of government agencies like the F.B.I. have carte blanche access to investigating anyone they want, and it seems like it is taken way too far,” says Gary. Gary is a strong proponent of the U.S. constitution and feels the freedoms provided by our forefathers are slowly dwindling away.

Gary’s son is currently serving in the military and he hopes the war in Afghanistan will be over soon and the troops will return home. He feels that 09/11 was the start of a cycle that has brought our country to its current condition. With the war, sluggish economy, high unemployment and turmoil in the Middle East, Gary prays there will not be an attack on the 10th anniversary of 09/11. Gary says, “The country and the fabric of America can withstand any attack, but I think another attack would be heartbreaking. I cried on 09/11.”

Currently The Department of Homeland Security and law enforcement officials are investigating what is described as a credible terror threat by al-Qaida coinciding with the 10th anniversary of the 09/11/2001 terror attacks. Security has been enhanced around the country in the weeks leading up to the 10th anniversary. Law enforcement officials have been on high alert, especially after information gathered from Osama bin Laden’s compound in May indicated that al-Qaida had considered attacking the U.S. on the 09/11 anniversary and other significant dates. Gary says, “I run a plumbing and sewer repair company on a daily basis and I don’t think about 09/11 nearly as much as I did when it happened, but the 10th anniversary brings it all back. I hope we all stay safe.”
